Climbers – I need your stories!

Hi readers! I’m reaching out to you for some information. I would like to hear about a time when you felt incredibly emotional while climbing. I’ve written a post on a particular time when I felt especially vulnerable, but I’d like to hear your stories, whether you’re male or female! 🙂

Your stories will remain completely anonymous, and you can email them anonymously from this site or from your personal email to kristademo@gmail.com Be prepared to have your stories published here, so feel free to change minor details to maintain anonymity. Your stories can vary anywhere from a few sentences to a few paragraphs. Any length will do – it’s in your hands!

  1. Happy to post here. I don’t think I’ve ever felt lower than a couple ripping into me while climbing I’d put up a tough VS 5a and was trying a HS 4b I had a total blank mid route, I placed a dozen pieces of gear and got totally stuck mid route. Eventually I made it more through scrambling and rubbish technique. What didn’t help was a couple on the ground commenting on how much gear I’d placed, how much chalk I was using (when I panic I chalk) and how much better they were.

    This totally wiped my day as one of them soloed behind me, never felt lower. Took me ages to get back on the rock but eventually started to get angry rather than down, climbing is for us all, it isn’t competitive, gear is there to save us when we need it, achieving a route I see as a team effort, every climber getting every climber to the top. Climbing is not easy, if it was we wouldn’t do it. I’ve leant gear mid route, lobbed large cams up from the ground and leant people slings for anchors. That’s what we do.

    1. Man, I am sorry to hear that! People need to think twice before they speak. Climbers, especially experienced climbers, should know better than to heckle other climbers ESPECIALLY when they’re in the middle of a climb. I can totally understand how that got to you. You are right – climbing is a team effort, and we should all be rooting for each other to succeed. There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition, but putting people down is something entirely uncalled for. I’m glad to hear you overcame that and got back on the rock. It’s definitely hard to bounce back after a mental hit. Thank you greatly for sharing! 🙂

      1. If I’d been belaying I would have told them to. Sadly total head melt. In regard to your situation, it’s amazing how often giving yourself a hard talking to works to get you up. Don’t beat yourself up, you made it, learn from it.

  2. I tried my first E1 trad climb not too long ago. I thought I’d step out of my comfort zone a little bit and push myself. I think I pushed myself a little to far because I started to get increasely angry and frustrated with myself. I knew what I needed to do, the moves were obvious but I just could do it! I was getting to the point of wanting to give up as I was doubting myself. I found it really hard to snap out of it. I managed to dog my way up the route but when I came down I was fairly annoyed. I kept saying to my cp ” I could have done that! I had it!” it took me a while to calm my self and say “Hey! you came to have fun, you made it to the top and you stepped outside your comfort zone. That’s progression and you should be proud of that!”

    1. It’s so easy to get in your head, and so hard to come out of it. We are always a lot stronger than we think, but sometimes just can’t get our bodies to do the moves. That’s great that you turned it around and left on a positive note! Sometimes we get wrapped up in the send, and forget that we’re climbing up cliffs and how cool that is!! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
